What is a School Resource Officer? |
The Canandaigua Police Department |
|
|
The School Resource Officer program (SRO) is a nationally accepted program involving the placement of a law enforcement officer within the educational environment. Traditionally, police and school did not interact until one called upon the other, however this proactive partnership between the Police Department and the School District allows a police officer (the SRO) to directly interact with the students in a positive manner, rather than reacting to criminal activity alone. This everyday interaction provides an opportunity for the SRO to help students with the many pressures today's young people find themselves having to confront, including the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, peer pressure, gang activity, and sex.

The SRO Triad of Duty |
| An SRO is trained to fulfill three primary roles: |
|
| |
1. Law Enforcer - First and foremost, they are law enforcement officers whose main purpose is to "keep the peace" in their schools so students can learn.
2. Advisor - Second, they are law-related counselors who provide guidance and information to students, their families, and school staff along with acting as links to support services both inside and outside the school environment.
3. Educator - Thirdly, they are law related education teachers who provide the schools with an additional resource by sharing their expertise in the classroom. |

Is our school so bad that we need an SRO?
This is a question that is common with parents, teachers, and community leaders. The question is easily answered when you ask yourself the following: Wouldn't you rather send your child to a school where there is an active law enforcement officer on duty, working with the school system, who acts quickly to solve problems?
The truth is, that while there have always been some concerns within and around our schools, an officer in the school is not a required necessity. Additionally, once you understand the role of the position, you will realize that an SRO is much more than just a “cop in the school”. The School Resource Officer Program is a proactive approach to a safe and enjoyable educational experience for our children and young adults, as well as a resource for our students and teachers.
